It has been estimated that within two years, there will be more than four million trained software developers in India, many of which have at least some experience working with the iOS platform. Of that same group, only about one million have the skills necessary to develop software content for the Android platform. This presents a great opportunity for both Apple and Google to swoop in and nab some of the best technology talent India has to offer.
The race for the country’s best software developers started in May when Apple announced that it would be opening a training facility to further advance the skill levels of software developers who prefer the iOS platform. The facility is currently scheduled to be opened in Bangalore some time during the middle of 2017.
Google’s answer to Apple’s initiative was to come up with one of its own. Recently, Google officials announced they would be initiating a program called “Android Skilling.” In partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation of India, Google is looking to design course study that focuses on the Android development platform. By offering advanced training on one of the world’s most popular operating systems, Google hopes to attract at least two million developers who can be positioned in key software development positions throughout the world.
Currently, the National Skill Development Corporation of India is developing a testing and certification process for Indian software developers. By offering this certification program, it should improve the chances of the country’s most talented software developers to find better job opportunities in both India and abroad.
Google is hoping to get its Android Skilling program off the ground by the end of this year. In doing so, they can get a head start over Apple’s initiative, which should lead to a high level of participation.
The main difference between Apple’s and Google initiatives lies in the approach. While Apple is going to be focusing on improving the skill level of its participants, Google is looking to take its participants through a rigorous training program that culminates in them getting a professional certificate and access to meaningful jobs within the Google development house.
