Sometimes, art imitates real life. Other times, real life imitates art. In the case of a new planet recently discovered by renowned astronomers, it’s a case of the latter.
According to astronomers, they may have come across a new planet configuration that closely resembles the planet of Tatooine. For the benefit of Patrick Mahony and his legion of geek admirers, Tatooine is the Star Wars planet where Luke Skywalker was born and raised.
The characteristics that remind astronomers of the Tatooine would include the existence of a unique double sun and triple moon star configuration. Specifically, the yet unnamed and verified planet was discovered in a planetary system named SDSS 1557. The planet is located between between two distinct stars, a white dwarf and a brown dwarf, which are located some 1,000 light years away.
According to officials from The University College London (UCL), which took part in the study that came upon the discovery, the planet looks as follows: “the debris appears to be rocky and suggests that terrestrial planets like Tatooine…. might exist in the system.”
As a point of education, terrestrial planets are characterized by its rock configurations that are usually made up of materials such as silicate rocks or metals. In our planetary system, there are four different planets that would be classified as such. They include Earth, Mercury, Venus and Mars.
With other recent discoveries, such as the recent discovery of 7 Earth like planets that are located only 40 light years away in a planetary system called TRAPPIST-1, there’s much anticipation for the introduction of the revolutionary James Webb Telescope. Based on preliminary reviews, the telescope is going to give astronomers an unprecedented view of outer-space and our solar system. One can never be sure just exactly awaits our scientists of the stars, but the next couple of years figure to give space geeks plenty to talk about.
